Pakistan became independent to provide its people a system of life based on Islam. The people, in spite of language differences, customs and traditions commonly follow one religion, that isIslam. The society and culture of Pakistan comprises numerous ethnic groups: the Punjabis, Potowaris, Kashmirees, Sindhis in east, Muhajirs, Makrani in the south; Baloch, Hazaras and Pashtuns in the west; and the Dards, Wakhi, Baltis, Shinaki and Burusho communities in the north. Islam is the main of Pakistan, and about 97% Pakistanis are Muslim. Pakistan has the second largest number of Muslims in the world after Indonesia.
